Location
Known as the city of a thousand suns (the yellow city), Izamal is a jewel of the Yucatan Peninsula. When Pope John Paul II visited its striking Catholic convent in 1993, all of Izamal’s buildings were painted a golden shade of yellow. The city boasts distinctive cobblestone streets, iron lamp posts, and gorgeous colonial buildings, that are all highlighted by its signature sun-kissed shade.
As the Yucatan’s oldest city, Izamal is home to five pyramids that serve as historic monuments. This revered destination, known as a ‘pueblo magico’ is graced with natural beauty, cultural riches, and historical importance. Izamal is comprised of three distinctive cultural histories — the ancient Mayan, the colonial, and the contemporary Mexican — that are fused together to give this city a distinct mystical and unconventional atmosphere. Izamal means “dew falling from heaven¨ in Mayan language. It was one of the most important Mayan civilizations before the Spanish conquistadors arrived to the city.
The past decades have not changed the charm found in the colonial and archaeological architecture where the ex-convent of San Antonio de Padua and the yellow streets remain witnesses of their religious past.
About Coqui Coqui Casa de Los Santos
Coqui Coqui Casa de Los Santos fuses these worlds of folklore, history and modernity all within this captivating residence that serves as an ode to both the historical and religious importance of such a magical place on the map. The one-room suite sits adjacent to the Mayan pyramid of Itzatul and serves as a space that keeps true to the Coqui Coqui style while also honoring the three cultures of Izamal.
The decor of Casa de los Santos is created to reflect the perfect merging of the catholique history and Mayan history because of its location in between the Mayan pyramid Itzamatul and the traditional convent of San Antonio de Padua. The room symbolizes the mixture of the Mayan and Catholique culture, as the suites is situated right in the middle of the historical Convent and the Mayan Pyramid which you can admire from the privacy of your own room.
Featuring an air of contemporary flair, religious reference, and indigenous folklore, it is housed in a restored colonial building with authentic peeling wall frescoes, antique tapestries and ornate floor tiles that neighbor the ancient Mayan ruins.
