The list: Ideal Destinations for Slow Travel Post Lock-down

Slow travel is an art, a mindset that we can all tap into whenever we’re craving more meaningful connection and purposeful experiences. As lockdown becomes a thing of the past, we’ll be seeking those small but impactful moments throughout our travels—shifting our focus to getaways that are spent savoring the simple things rather than giving in to the experience everything mentality.

While slow travel can happen anywhere, there are some destinations that are simply woven together by a slower pace of life. These places aren’t always the most convenient or obvious, but they have a way of feeling removed from the rest of the world...rotating at a speed all their own. Lazy mornings with nowhere to be, afternoons wandering barefoot or connecting with like-minded locals, and evenings that remind us of why we set out on adventures in the first place. This is escapism at its finest.

Mentally curating lists of treasured destinations that we hope to escape to when the time is right, here are a few spots that are ideal for catching our breath and embracing the slow travel movement. When you’re ready, take a moment to discover a gem that speaks to your post lock-down daydreams.

Andaman & Nicobar Islands

Only accessible by domestic flights from India, these intriguing remote islands are cut from the slow travel thread. Fringed by jungles and charmed with eco-tourism, they’re a far-flung escape that makes it easy to indulge in a slower way of life.

Montana

Where the mountains meet the prairies. Free spirits can run free around the wide-open ranch country and high deserts of Montana. Soaking up the simplest of moments is easy when you’re living the rancher’s way of life.

Lamu Island

Just off the Coast of Kenya and a bit tricky to get to, as it often is with many of the world’s most enchanting destinations, Lamu Island’s blend of Arab architecture, Indian culture, calls to prayer, and white plastered Swahili villas seem to be something of a curious traveler’s dream.

Lapland, Finland

Naturally in tune with the slower pace of Nordic countries, the northernmost region of Finland knows how to cast a spell. Its endless wilderness and night skies filled with stars and the Northern lights are bound to slow down your travels.

Vieques, Puerto Rico

Only 21 miles wide, the empty, sugary beaches of Vieques make the journey getting there one worthwhile. Lush and low-key, your time spent here can be focused on mindful relaxation and nothing more.

Lake Atitlán, Guatemala

Charming and hypnotic, this cosmic lake offers all of the good things you need for a truly meaningful escape—Mayan artisan towns, friendly locals, and an unmatched mellow vibe.

Sri Lanka’s Southern Province

Seemingly made with surfers, bohemians, and conscious explorers in mind, the chilled out towns and simplistic culture of Sri Lanka’s Southern Province make for an honest-to-goodness slow travel getaway.
