Travel diaries: Checking in to La Bionda
This Summer was one long-awaited, as one of my first trips after many months in Madrid I didn’t have to venture too far to find what I was looking for, a place filled with heart and inspiration, and a place to relax. Driving into Begur, Costa Brava, the landscape instantly became lush with greenery and soaring sea views that made me sigh with relief. After a short walk winding through the charming cobblestone streets of Begur’s old town, Hotel La Bionda can be found nestled on an unassuming quiet corner, a gem waiting to be discovered.
Just a few steps inside the 17th-century lobby of La Bionda and my eyes were taken from one beautifully unique design detail to another. The eclectic interior is decorated with such a tasteful eye while feeling effortless and authentic, after a warm welcome from chic owner Carla, it all made sense. With just 8 rooms, it feels more like a home than a hotel, as a few stylish looking guests from all corners of the world politely passed one another in the beautiful common areas, with wide-open doors letting in a fresh breeze from the large terrace where breakfast is served on handmade and hand-painted ceramics made by Carla’s uncle. The place feels personal.
Carla told me the interior of the hotel was inspired by the 1920s and 1930s, which comes through in every last detail, while still feeling modern, comfortable, and luxurious in every way. Decorated with a mix of vintage pieces and modern furniture, each of the 8 rooms is unique, and each has been inspired by a different female from history which the room has been named after, just another gem for you to discover during your stay.
I stayed in the Valentina room, an indulgent suite complete with a large bathtub and private terrace. From the candy-striped curtains to the original patterned tiles, and accents of vintage lamps and curiosities, I never wanted to leave and quickly sunk into the bath to unwind while overlooking the leafy terrace and enjoying the silence.
La Bionda feels one-of-a-kind, sitting in the heart of the old town, close to the sea, and in its essence down-to-earth.
