Morocco Travel Diary

The New York City based & Colombian raised photographer Camila Gutiérrez takes us to her last trip to Morocco, capturing the essence of this amazing country and its gorgeous colors.

I've always believed in savoring the moments. In the end, those moments live forever. We planned our trip to Morocco 3 months prior to arrival. I'm the kind of person who prefers to revel in the deliciousness one place at a time.

My partner and I spent 4 days in Marrakech, visiting the essential museums, mesquites, santuarios. We were free, allowing ourselves to get lost around the city, in the Medina, through the souks, and ending each day in our stunning Riad.

Once night arrived, we loved to walk through the Jamaa el Fna which has an incredible communal energy. After sunset, is when everyone starts the magic, music and dance.

On our 4th day in Marrakech, we decided to take a day trip to Essaouira which is 3 hours away. When we arrived, we had time to walk through the city. Essaouira has an oceanic vibe creating a different esthetic since being close to the sea. We had an amazing lunch of fresh fish before returning to Marrakech to rest. The next day we were to embark on a long journey to the desert...

We rose early to cross the High Atlas. It's undeniable beauty has many breathtaking views, landscapes, and striking green fields amidst the desert backdrop.

We crossed the Dades Gorge and stopped in Ouarzazate - a popular filming location for movies/shows such as, "The Gladiator" and "Game of Thrones."

We spent the night in a town close by. The next day we drove until Merzouga, until sunset to ride our camels. It was unforgettable.

The camels were beautiful creatures and really friendly. We camped under the desert stars. Sunrise was at 4:30am and holds the title as best sunrise ever. So humbled and thankful, we rode our camels back to the hotel. Next was 13 hours back to Marrakech. It was long, but worth the time.

I highly recommend visiting Morocco and dare you to get lost.

Hôtel Weekend

Travel for yourself, not for others. Embrace a slower pace and get to know the heart of your destination. Walk barefoot and tilt your head up to the sun. Enjoy the journey itself; take a road trip, sit in the window of a train or on the deck of a boat. Seek out hidden gems and soak up the atmosphere. Set your out of office. Make memories you'll treasure.
