Inside Eau Club's Emily Bibb trip to Bondi Beach

Eau Club founder & designer Emily Bibb loves a good coast. Having lived in Malibu, Ireland and now New York City, it’s no surprise that she chose Bondi Beach as the backdrop for her brand’s most recent lookbook.  “I have lived all around the world and no other place is quite like Bondi.  It’s truly reflective of a culture around the water. No matter the time of day, there is something happening: be it lifeguard training, swimming, surfing, sunbathing. The coast is the center of it all, surrounded by local restaurants, coffee shops, and boutiques. It’s a ‘water baby’s’ dream.” Below, Emily shares her guide to her favorite spots around the water.

Where to wake up?

Since travel from NYC to Australia lends itself to some serious jetlag, I found myself making the most of early mornings with sunrise hikes — my favorite being that of Flat Rock Point.  It’s a truly a magical spot that overlooks all of Bondi. It’s beyond serene and one of those places that evokes gratitude.  As for accommodation, consider Hotel Ravesis. It has a fun vibe in the the heart of it all. You can also find some great Airbnbs on any budget.

Time for an early swim. Any hidden beaches only locals know about?

I came across several bays during my stay, but nothing beats the Bondi Icebergs Pool for those who love a good swim. As it’s an Olympic size pool that flows into the sea, it’s surrounded by swimmers, surfers, sunbathers — I felt surrounded by my kind! A dip here was something I had dreamed of for years and did not disappoint.

Where is brunch?

My fiancé (an Aussie) got me hooked on Australian breakfast fare a few years back. Porch and Parlour is the epitome of that. I found myself frequenting it often as it perfected all the Australian classics: avocado toast, granola bowls, a classic Flat White. Located across from the beach, it’s the perfect fuel after a long surf or swim (most people arrive in their bathers).

Best spot for shopping? Which stores?

Australian’s have a knack for detail and it’s best reflected in their stores. I love the Campbell Parade neighborhood. It’s filled with a several good boutiques (both established & local). A few of my favorite are Saturday Surf NYC, Playa by Lucy Folk, Tuchuzy, & Aquabumps.

Your all time favorite restaurant for lunch?

I loved North Bondi Fish (NBF). It’s a casual spot on the water and fitting for a light lunch and rose on the patio. I suggest the ‘small plates’ approach; sharing everything family style.

Needing inspiration. Your favorite art galleries, museums or inspirational place to go?

Since Bondi favors the outdoors, the best place for inspiration is the Bondi to Bronte Walk. It’s a coastal trail that connects the Sydney beaches. The views are breathtaking — beautiful enough to serve as the focal point during the EAU CLUB shoot. Highlights include Tamarama Surf Life Saving Club and Mackenzies Bay.

Where do we go for dinner with friends?

There are several good spots, but I enjoyed The Rocker Bondi — great vibe, great food. Something for everyone.

and for a date?

Blaca — the menu is Japanese fusion with several fresh-fish options. The food almost looks like art against the minimal décor.  Several good cocktail options to choose from as well!

A tourist trap we should avoid?

I would consider the ‘main strip’ of Campbell Parade, overlooking the main beach of Bondi, to feel the most touristy. Yet, at the same time it offers so much charm. I’d still suggest it as I couldn’t imagine the neighborhood without it.

Best place to take in the sunset?

It goes without saying, the Icebergs Dining Room and Bar. The bar itself is a scene, with a scene — overlooking the main beach of Bondi and accompanying neighborhoods. The hero, of course, is the pool (and the swimmers finishing their final laps). From every angle, a bad view is impossible.

How were you inspired by this destination for your brand?

As a former swimmer, EAU CLUB is not only inspired by my love for the water, but the cultures that surround it. Because the brand is so deeply personal, each season highlights a different coastal region — the people and places — that have inspired me.  Since childhood, I have always had a fascination for Sydney (Bondi in particular). To me, it’s one of the only cities truly based around the water — everything from the food to the sports. Sydney, was also number one on my bucket list, being it was the home of the 2000 Olympics. This was the first Games I watched from afar, and immediately fell in love with the sport of swimming. For these reasons, no other spot feels as authentic to EAU CLUB than Bondi.
