Maana Kyoto
Maana Kyoto draws inspiration from Kyoto's unpretentious yet deeply meaningful way of life. Upon arrival, guests are immediately greeted with a sense of comfort and warmth. The presence of various natural materials fills the air with a subtle earthy scent. Visually, the space embraces purity and balance through minimal decoration, emphasizing the beauty of negative space. Maana Kyoto aims to preserve the house's original character, avoiding changes made solely for the sake of change. Instead, spaces are repurposed with a focus on functional needs, transforming the house into a home suitable for modern-day living.
In the primary bedroom, the designers carefully restored the original ceilings, window frames, and shoji screens, bringing back their intended purpose and historical charm. To create an intriguing contrast with the traditional setting, a modern dried bonsai piece was placed opposite the bed, adding a touch of contemporary artistry.
Moving to the living room, the original tokonoma on the right wall was meticulously restored to serve as a showcase for artwork created by local up-and-coming artists. The seamless tatami flooring and a custom low wood table define the living space without obstructing the beautiful view of the garden. This thoughtful design allows the living area to harmonize with nature while providing an elegant and functional environment for relaxation and contemplation.
The old gallery kitchen has been artfully repurposed, now transformed into a luxurious bathroom that offers a stunning view of the garden's Maple Tree. Tone on tone textures create a formless and soundless integrity in this minimal relaxation space. The bathtub itself is a masterpiece, Shigaraki-yaki handcrafted by skilled ceramic artisans from the Shigaraki area.
